What is a long distance move?

A long distance move is technically any shipment of household goods that crosses state lines. A moving company that performs long distance move must comply with interstate regulations set by the U.S. Department of Transportation. More specifically, moving companies are governed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), a division of the U.S. DOT.

Who is moving long distance?

Every year, close to 4.7 million people in the U.S. move long distance. According to data compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau, the majority of people who are moving are renters. A greater percentage of people is moving to suburban areas and out of major metropolitan areas, and the most common reason for moving is job-related.

How much does moving long distance cost?

Moving long distance depends on a number of variables, but the two biggest contributing factors are the weight of the shipment and the distance of the move. According to the American Moving & Storage Association, the average interstate move costs $4300, which is for a 1225-mile, 7500-pound move. To give you a better idea, that would be the approximate cost of moving a 2-3 bedroom home from San Francisco to Denver.

How does getting a quote work?

Once you submit your moving information, you’ll be contacted by up to 4 carriers who service your moving route. These moving companies will start by providing you a rough estimate of moving costs via phone or email based on the data you entered.

By law, interstate carriers are also required to provide customers with an in-home estimate. With this estimate, the moving company sends out a staff person to take a physical survey of your items and provide a more accurate estimate. Based on this survey, the moving company will then provide you with a written moving quote stating the rate for your move.

How many quotes should I get?

To make sure you’re getting a good rate, we recommend getting quotes from at least three different moving companies.

How long will it take to move?

While most local moves are performed in a matter of hours, moving long distance takes a lot longer. Depending on whether you opt for a direct shipment or not, your long distance move will take anywhere from a week to 3-4 weeks.

What things am I not allowed to move?

Moving companies won’t let you move any hazardous or perishable items. These include, but are not limited to, aerosols, car batteries, lighter fluid, gasoline, bleach, loaded guns, paint, poison, chemicals, propane, and frozen foods. Additionally, you may not ship pets or household plants.

Do most carriers charge a flat fee or a variable rate?

By law, long distance moving companies are required to publish tariffs disclosing the rates they charge for their services. Usually these are dozens of pages long, are convoluted, and don’t make for very interesting reading. In short, most movers will estimate the weight of your shipment then used their published tariff rate to give you a quote for your move. Depending on the type of quote given, your final bill for their services may be more or less than this estimate based on the actual weight of your shipment. While the rate per pound will stay the same, the variables the weight of your shipment and the distance of your move are the two variables that will affect your total moving cost.
